File Extension .Psd

PSD is the file extension linked to a Photoshop Document and it is the proprietary file extension or format developed by Adobe for files that contain layered images and other information regarding these images. PSD files however are not commonly found in different platforms by many end users as these files are usually restricted to Photoshop and other PSD design and development environments and thus only accessible through the abovementioned application.

PSD is the default file format for the application Adobe Photoshop then as it allows images to be saved while a fully editable layer or layers are retained. Because of this, PSD files are only modifiable in a Photoshop or PSD environment where an image is being edited. Final images though are usually stored or saved in different image formats like JPEG, PNG and TIFF, depending on how the user wants to use the image. PSD is a widely used file format that even Photoshop’s rival applications support this file format and can open PSD files for modification.

The reason that makes PSD so popular is the fact that it sore images in layers with each layer containing different raster of vector images, filters, effects and many more. PSD layers could also contain color spaces, masks, alpha channels, text, transparency and many other formatting and image settings needed to develop a good image. Each layer of a PSD file is referenced by a different name and description and so users find it easy to work with the file.
