Users can see files with a 002 file extension in association with different archiving utilities or compression tools. The 002 file extension was used in the past (and could still be used until now) for some compression tools’ multi-volume files or archives. Some of these tools are Winrar and 7-Zip. These tools use a general file sequence of compressed files in 001, 002, 003, 004, etc. Users need all the parts of the multi-volume archive to successfully decompress and extract the content of an archived file/s because if one is missing, it wouldn’t be possible.
When it comes to multi-volume archives like this, file extension 002 usually signifies the second volume or part of the archive. Files with this number format file extension are treated as data containers that could have one or more component files that are compressed in one archived file. The method of file splitting and joining used in archiving files is useful for segmenting large files into smaller chunks of files. This makes files easier to transfer or copied especially for limited disc devices such as a CD.
Depending on how the files are archived or what compression method was used and the archiving application that is present in a computer system, files with numbered file extension such as 002 may be opened through double-clicking to begin the extracting process. Computers will automatically identify that extraction of such files must go in a sequence so it will start from 001 to 002 to 003, etc. Another way is to load the file in an archiving utility’s environment and extract the contents from there.
The best way to open/decompress a 002 file however is to use the same compression tool that a user used to archived the file. Some of these tools are as follows:
